A Bangladeshi woman died on Wednesday night being hit by a car while crossing a Chicago street in the USA.

Bina Chowdhury, 42, a resident of Hoffman Avenue in Park Ridge area, was crossing Potter Road north of Farrell Avenue just after 6pm (local time) when she was hit by a car, reports local newspaper The Chicago Tribune quoting police.

Park Ridge Deputy Police Chief Duane Mellema said Bina was alone at the time she was crossing the street, reports UNB.

She was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where she later died of her injuries, police said.

Bina immigrated to the US with her family as a teenager and settled in Chicago, her nephew Sakif Ahmed told the newspaper.

Bina's death remains under investigation by the Park Ridge police, authorities said.

According to Chicago Tribune, a native of Bangladesh and the seventh of eight children, Chowdhury immigrated to the United States with her family as a teenager and settled in Chicago, Ahmed said. For about the last seven years, she had lived with her sister's family — which included Ahmed — in Park Ridge, he said.

"Everybody is devastated," Ahmed said. "Sometimes you don't realize what type of a family member you have until you lose that family member. I think everyone realizes they lost a big one. They lost someone very, very important."

Ahmed described his aunt was someone who was "always happy" and "always helping anybody out whenever she could."

Her own life had been difficult, he acknowledged. Her son died when he was just 1 year old, Ahmed said. For the last five years, she had devoted her life to being at her mother's side, spending several hours of each day at the nursing home, often pinging along home-cooked Bengali meals, which her mother preferred over the "bland" nursing home food, Ahmed said.
