Rajshahi University authorities decided to request Political Science department chairman Professor Nasima Jaman to resign immediately from her post in the wake of conflict between two groups of teachers in the department.

RU Syndicate meeting, presided over vice chancellor Professor Abdus Sobhan, took the decision on Saturday night in its 475th meeting.

Political Science department Associate Professor Rukhsana Parvin also will be given a show cause notice asking why necessary steps would not be taken against her for her false sexual harassment allegation against a teacher of the department.

RU Syndicate member Professor KBM Mahbubur Rahman said students are in trouble amid the hostile situation at Political Science department, and so the matter was placed on syndicate meeting, and the university authorities has decided to request Nasima Jaman to resign as chairman voluntarily.

Another syndicate member Professor Akhter Faruque, who also the head of investigation committee of political science department’s ongoing issue, said the probe committee didn’t find any proof against Prof Ruhul Amin who was accused by Rukhsana Parvin of sexual harassment.

On July 27, 11 out 14 teachers of Political Science department submitted a complaint to the chairman against Rukhsana Parvin for her ‘offensive comments’ about the department and its teachers.

Later, Rukhsana Parvin and chairman Nasima Jaman submitted counter-complaint to RU vice chancellor against the 11 teachers where Rukhsana accused Professor Ruhul Amin of committing sexual harassment. RU authority formed an investigation committee led by Professor Akhter Faruque to look into the matter.

Professor Akhter Faruque said a letter will be served by the university administration to Rukhsana Parvin seeking her explanation about the false allegation and necessary steps would be taken against her after receiving her answer, he added.

Meanwhile, RU authority has changed the policy of teacher appointment. Syndicate members said that the required CGPA has been reduced considering the result variation of different departments.

In three categories, the changes will apply. For Arts, Fine Arts faculty and Institute of Bangladesh Studies, the required CGPA has been fixed 3.00 in both honors and masters.

For Social Science, Law, Business Studies faculty and Institute of Business Administration the required CGPA is 3.25 in both honors and masters and finally for the Science, Life and Earth Science, Agriculture and Engineering faculty, the CGPA is 3.50 in both honors and masters.
