Haradhan Bandopadhyay’s 91st birth anniversary

Haradhan Bandopadhyay was a Bengali screen and stage actor. The actor worked with Satyajit Ray in films like 'Shonar Kella', 'Jai Baba Felunath' and 'Mahanagar' among others. Today marks the 91st birth anniversary of this gifted actor. He was born in Kushtia in 1926 on this day.
Haradhan also worked with other renowned directors like Mrinal Sen and Sandip Ray. He gave an acclaimed performance in 'Anurag', Basu's film 'Barfi' and also worked in another Hindi movie 'Parineeta'.
Haradhan started his schooling at Kushthia Municipal School. He passed matriculation in 1944. In 1946, he finished his IA examination from City College, Kolkata, an affiliate of the University of Kolkata. He worked in Gun and Shell factory. In 1946, he joined an insurance company, and he continued his work in there till his retirement. He was even sent to jail for his involvement in freedom struggle movement of India. He made his debut in director Atanu Bandopad-hay's film "Devdut" in 1948. He was a celebrated stage artiste who acted in hundreds of plays, working with famous names like Ahindra Choudhury and Chhabi Biswas. In early days of his career, he also performed in legendary Utpal Dutt's famous play 'Ferari Fauj'. The actor was honoured with 'Banga Vibhushan' in 2012 by the West Bengal government for his outstanding contribution in the field of arts and culture. Haradhan died in 2013 at the age of 86.
