Another suspected person was arrested in connection with the murder of Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal leader Shawkat Ali Didar in Gopalganj on Saturday night.
The arrestee is Sihab Molla, 35, son of Satter Molla of Gobra Dakkhinpara village of Gopalganj Sadar upazila. Three individuals, so far, were arrested in this connection.
Earlier, a Gopalganj court on Saturday sent two persons --Alimuzzaman Chowdhury, 50, and Sigar Sheikh, 42, residents of Gonapara area under Sadar upazila in Gopalganj, people to jail for their involvement in connection with the murder of Didar in an attack allegedly by Awami League men in the district town on Friday.
Mohammad Anisur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Gopalganj Sadar Police Station, said police arrested Sihab for his suspicious involvement in the murder. As no case has been filed yet in connection with the murder, Sihab was shown arrested under section 54 and later a court sent him to jail.
Leaders and activists of BNP alleged that the party's motorcade left for Tungipara after holding a rally at Bedgram intersection in Gopalganj around 5PM on Friday (September 13).
As the vehicles reached Ghonapara, 200-300 leaders and activists of the AL and its affiliates intercepted them and attacked BNP and Swechchhasebak Dal leaders. The attackers also vandalised 10 cars and injured at least 50 activists.
A chase and counter-chase took place during that time and Shawkat Ali Didar, 40, the sports affairs secretary of the Swechchhasebak Dal central committee, was killed and 40 others, including Swechchhasebak Dal central committee president SM Zilani and his wife Rawshan Ara Ratna, Gopalganj district unit Mohila Dal, were injured in the attack.
