An intellectually challenged girl was killed after being struck with a hammer, reportedly for playing loud music in front of a house in Satkhira Sadar Upazila on Saturday morning.
The victim was identified as Rozina Khatun Chumki, 20, daughter of Rezaul Karim of Thanaghata village and a vocational student at SWID Khatimunnesa Hanif Laskar Intellectually Challenged School in Satkhira town.
Quoting witnesses, RAB-6 Commander Md Faisal Tanvir said Ilias Hossain, 27, a local resident, attacked Chumki as she was playing loud music on a speaker and walking in front of his house.
They locked into altercation over the issue and at one stage alleged drug addict Hossain hit Chumki on the head with a hammer several times at Thanaghata intersection of Labsa union under the Satkhira Sadar upazila, leaving her critically injured.
She was taken to the Satkhira Sadar Hospital where on-duty doctors declared her dead.
Momtaz Mujid, on-duty physician at Satkhira Sadar Hospital, said that Chumki was brought in dead to the hospital with major head injury.
Following the attack, locals detained Ilias as he attempting to flee and handed him over to the RAB. Later, RAB members detained five people, including Ilias’s parents, from the spot.
Md Tuhinuzzaman, Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) of Satkhira Sadar Police Station, said after autopsy body was handed over to the family. As they were busy with burial, no complaint has been filed yet.
Faisal Tanvir said Ilias was also admitted to the same hospital as he was injured by mob beating.
