Australian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Nardia Simpson met with BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday (September 11) at the BNP Chairperson's office at Gulshan in Dhaka.
The High Commissioner was accompanied by Deputy Head of Mission Clinton Pobke and First Secretary Lara Adams, BNP Media Cell member Shairul Kabir Khan told reporters.
BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Organising Secretary Shyama Obaid were also present.
During the meeting, both sides discussed about the situation prevailing in the country following the fall of Sheikh Hasina goverment, various works taken by the interim government, trade and commerce, investment and education etc between Bangladesh and Australia.
However, the interim government led by Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus and possible 13th National Parliamentary elections came under talks at the meeting.
Coming out of the meeting, BNP's Foreign Affairs Committee's Senior Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said they held a lengthy discussion at the meeting. "What we are thinking, how the interim government is doing, what it will do in future, what the expectations of the countrymen are, what our expectations are, trade and investment, geopolitical situation, Rohingya issue, and exchange of higher education between the two countries etc were featured at the talks."
The Australian delegation wanted to know when the general election is going to be held in the context of the present situation, how much time will require to hold the election and what changes will require for the election activities. "The delegation expected that the issue related to handing over power to a democratically elected government will move ahead smoothly."
