Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed and nine others have sued in an attempt to murder case on charge of attacking a supreme court lawyer and human rights activist Golam Mohammad Rabbani near Matshya Bhaban area in 2013.
Begum Meherunnesa Haque, mother of Golam Mohammad Rabbani alias Nayon Bangalee and member of national executive committee of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), on Wednesday filed a petition with Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate (MM) Arobia Khanom’s court.
After hearing the statement of the complainant, the court, instructed the Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shahabagh Police Station to receive the complaint as a first information report (FIR).
Former president of Juba League, Dhaka south city unit Ismail Chowdhury Samrat, former Member of Parliament (MP) from Bhola-3 constituency Nurunnabi Chowdhury Shayon, former MP from Mirpur area Elias Mollah, former MP from Kumilla-11 Mujibul Hauque Mujib, former chiefs of the Detective Branch (DB) Krishna Pada Ray and Syed Bazlul Karim, former Joint Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Biplob Kumar Sarkar, the then OC of Shahbagh Police Station Nasir Uddin and personal officer of Mujibul Haque Alamgir Kabir Majumder are made accused in the case, among others.
According to the FIR, the accused, led by the then OC Shahbagh Nasir and Ismail Chowdhury Samrat, attacked Nayon Bangalee near Matshaya Bhaban crossing while he was leading a BNP procession towards Shahbagh after attending a party programme at National Press Club on November 22 in 2013.
He was critically injured during the attack that was published in various news media at that time. The victim is now under treatment abroad, the FIR added.
