The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-11 has arrested Azmeri Osman's driver and associate Md Jamshed in Narayanganj's meritorious student Tanveer Mohammad Twaki murder case.
Jamshed, 37, was arrested from his house at Mirpur area in the capital early Wednesday morning.
RAB-11 Battalion Commander Lt Col Tanveer Mahmud Pasha confirmed it.
With Jamshed, four accused have been arrested in Twaki murder case over the last four days.
Azmeri Osman is the son of former Narayanganj 5 (City-Bandar) MP late Nasim Osman and nephew of former MP Shamim Osman. Though the name of Azmeri Osman was surfaced in a confessional statement under Section 164 some 11 years ago for his alleged involvement in Twaki murder, he was not arrested. Azmeri Osman has roamed with his associates in broad-daylight in Narayanganj city.
Contacted RAB-11 Battalion Commander Lt Col Tanveer Mahmud Pasha said Jamshed is the driver of Azmeri Osman. In their confessional statements, two accused said Jamshed was driving the car which was used to abducting Twaki and dumping his dead body after murder. He has been arrested for questioning.
Murder led by Azmeri Osman
Earlier on September 8, RAB-11 arrested Shafayet Hossain Shipon from Chashara area in Narayanganj city and Kajal Howlader from Dhanmondi area in Dhaka on September 8. On September 9, Mamun Mia was arrested from Kalir Bazar area in the city. Then a cour in Narayanganj placed the three accused on a six-day remand. They are now under remand in RAB-11 custody.
Earlier in connection with Twaki murder, Azmeri Osman's associates Yusuf Hossain Liton, Sultan Shawkat alias Bhromor, Tayeb Uddin Jacky and Rifat Hossain Shimanto were arrested. Among them, Yusuf Hossain and Sultan Shawkat gave confessional statements to court confessing their crimes under Section 164. These five accused have been absconding upon receiving bail from court, said plaintiff's lawyer Pradip Ghosh.
Seventeen-year-old Twaki went missing from in front of his house at Shayesta Kha Road in Narayanganj city on March 6, 2013. His father Rafiur Rabbi filed a general diary with Sadar Police Station on the same day and sent a letter to RAB-11 as well.
Twaki's dead body was found in the Kumudini canal of the Shitalakkhya River two days later. His father filed a case against unnamed accused who were angry with him for his social and cultural activities.
On March 18, Rafiur Rabbi wrote a letter to the then-superintendent of police in Narayanganj and accused Narayanganj-4 MP Shamim Osman, his son Ayon Osman, Azmeri Osman, and others of being involved in the murder.
Police arrested Yusuf Hossain alias Liton, and Rifat Bin Osman in this regard. The case was handed over to RAB-11 in June after the victim's father filed a petition with the High Court over the police's inaction to make any further progress.
Subsequently, RAB-11 personnel arrested Saleh Mohammad alias Simanta, Sultan Shawkat alias Bhromor, and Tayeb Uddin Ahmed in connection with the murder.
Later on, Liton and Bhromor gave confessional statements before courts, revealing the identities of 11 people involved in the murder.
In his statement, Bhromor said Twaki was murdered at the office of Azmeri Osman.
Azmeri led the murder, he said, adding that Twaki's body was packed in a gunnysack and loaded in Azmeri's car.
The body was taken to Charargop and dumped in the Shitalakhya River, according to the statement.
However, Bhromor later filed a petition to withdraw his confessional statement.
Bloodstained trousers were recovered from Azmeri Osman's office in a RAB-11 raid on August 7, 2013.
On March 5, 2014, the investigating agency RAB-11 told at a press conference that 11 people had killed Twaki at the torture cell of Osman family at their directives. They (RAB-11) would submit a chargesheet to the court soon. But, that chargesheet has never been submitted to the court. Twaki Mancha has been observing a candle -lightning programme in Narayanganj city on the 8th day of every month demanding submission of chargesheet in Twaki murder case and arrest of the accused.
