Two garment workers were killed and three others were injured after being run over by a truck in Kaliakoir upazila in Gazipur district on Tuesday.
The identities of the dead could not be known immediately.
The injured were admitted to a nearby hospital. Shahadat Hossain, officer-in-charge of Naozor Highway Police Station, said.
According to locals, during the lunch break, workers from Sterling Designs factory at Palli Bidyut area of Kaliakoir were crossing the highway on foot. At that moment, a fast-moving cargo truck, heading toward North Bengal, ran over them, UNB reports.
Two workers died on the spot. Following the accident, outraged workers intercepted the truck, set it on fire, and blocked the Dhaka-Tangail highway, bringing traffic to a standstill. Police and fire service personnel arrived to bring the situation under control.
After two hours, traffic flow returned to normal, the OC said.
