A protest by students from technical education institutions has blocked the Satrasta area of Dhaka's Tejgaon, leading to heavy congestion in the area and nearby roads.

The students, under the banner of the 'Technical Student Movement', blocked the road around noon on Monday. They were still holding a demonstration in the area as of 2pm.

Gazi Shamimur Rahman, chief of the Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station, said:
"The students are still blocking the road. This has brought traffic to a standstill on both sides of the road. We are speaking to them and are trying to return the situation to normal."

As the roads have been blocked for over two hours, there is also heavy traffic congestion in the Hatirjheel, Mogbazar, Karwan Bazar, Farmgate, Bijoy Sarani, and Mohakhali areas.

The protesters are putting forward a six-point list of demands.

They are calling for all craft instructors recruited under the 'controversial' process in 2021 be transferred from the technical directorate and all institutions immediately, that the diploma engineering course be of a four-year duration and each semester should be of a full term (six months), that no one other than diploma engineers can apply for the post of deputy assistant engineer (Grade 10), and that the post of deputy assistant engineer and equivalent posts be reserved for diploma engineers.

They also demand the technical education board to be reformed so that no non-technical officials are involved in the management of
the technical sector, that the teacher crisis be eliminated by the amendment of the 'controversial' recruitment rules of the Department of Technical Education, and the appointment of technical manpower to all vacant posts.

The protesters also want more higher education opportunities for students with diplomas in engineering.     —bdnews24.com
