Mahfuza Akter became champion and Sifat Hossain runner-up in the Salma Begum Memorial Library Chess Tournament in Narayanganj on Monday. Both scored the same three points from four matches and played a tie-breaker to decide the topper.
Mohammad Fahad placed third and Mohammad Hasan fourth with 2.5 points. On the other hand, Jubaida Islam Bushra secured fifth place with two points.
The students of Kalyandi Govt Primary School participated in the Salma Begum Memorial Library Chess Tournament in a Swiss Tournament format. This chess format is a non-elimination format involving several rounds of competition.
Unlike a knockout tournament, players are not eliminated after losses. Instead, they are paired up once again in each round to play against opponents with a similar score, keeping the competition balanced and intriguing. Thus, students can play more in a tournament and learn in a competitive environment.
The Head Master of Kalyandi Govt Primary School Razia Jesmin and FIDE Arbiter Mohammad Shamim handed over the prizes to the winners as special guests.
