What should be role of university teachers?

Due to political influence and constitutional complications evident in autonomous universities of Bangladesh, teachers are not held accountable for their classroom activities. Moreover, they are not responsible for the quality of classes in the classroom, taking sufficient number of classes, impartiality in the classroom, providing the core message of education reaching the heart of the students and the effectiveness of the teaching method etc. Nevertheless, there is no apparent urgent action from the administration. So what is the way to determine the real and moral responsibilities of a teacher?

Teaching is undoubtedly a noble profession and it is effective only when one takes it to the heart, as a passion, not as a business deal. Educational institutions, especially, universities have means of assessment such as tests, presentations, etc. to keep a student on the right path of learning, just as it is necessary to formulate teacher assessment methods, which will be determined by the ordinary students. For example, the students of a particular department will evaluate the teaching qualities of the teachers who have taken the classes of a certain year or semester. Let's say this criterion is 10. How many ratings out of 10 should be given will be determined by each student.

Again, an "Opinion Box" can be kept for teacher evaluation to highlight what topics the students find most admirable or what topics a teacher should add or subtract from the curriculum or teaching procedure. Besides, provision should be made to award one or more teachers of certain departments as "Best Teachers" every year according to the ratings given by the students which will motivate them to make their class activities more effective and productive.

A responsible teacher always stands firm in the place of impartiality in revealing the truth. Impartiality and equality in all matters are the main characteristics of a true teacher, actually, in assessing a student both in and out of the classroom. There is often disparity in the grading system of a batch in case of group or seminar based work under different teachers for their own individual marking system as they do not follow a specific marking format given by the administration or there is no definite marking format at all. Hence, it is very important to agree and implement a clear and complete marking format through coordination among all the teachers of a particular department. In this regard, a key role of the central administration with each department is the need of the hour.

How is it possible to impart knowledge of love, patriotism and responsibility to the students if there is unhealthy competition and lack of harmony among the teachers? Above all, removing the limitations of team-like things, party politics and prejudiced obedience, maintaining good relations and harmony among all the teachers of a specific department, coordinating with all in every field and taking relevant decisions will ensure the real provision of higher education.

Finally, the autonomous universities should bring constitutional liability upon teachers to ensure accountability in classroom activities. Otherwise, provisions should be made to fire them if they are not found responsible. University teachers who are known as the "Conscience of the Nation" should develop the mentality of playing a role which will be free from party influence, impartial and noticeable in every crisis of the country along with constant research and findings. Every teacher will be a living example of ethics, compassion, patriotism, love, honesty and other positive qualities because students are imitative by nature. Furthermore, every teacher will be appointed in a transparent and fair manner totally on the basis of skill and merit, not on the basis of any party affiliation, nepotism or corruption.
Consequently, the student-teacher relationship will be meaningful, education will be effective and Bangladesh will be a different and exemplary nation on the world map.
