A group of miscreants reportedly hacked a youth to death and fled the scene with his severed right hand at Daudkandi upazila of Cumilla district on Saturday.
The incident occurred around 11 AM on Saturday at Olanpara village under the upazila.
Gouripur Police Investigation Cente in-charge inspector Romen Barua confirmed the information.
The victim Md. Mohiuddin, 35, was a resident of the village and worked as a day laborer.
Local sources reported that Mohiuddin was returning home from Gouripur bazaar when a group of assailants attacked him with sharp weapons near a mosque in the village. After hearing his scream, locals rushed him to the Gouripur Health Complex where he was declared dead.
Dr. Jannatul Naeem from the health complex confirmed that Mohiuddin was brought dead, with his right arm severed above the elbow and deep wounds on his head and various parts of his body. The doctor added that the cause of death was excessive blood loss.
The victim's older brother, Md. Mohsin, stated, "Mohiuddin worked as a laborer and he had no involvement in politics and no known enemies. We don’t understand why someone would kill him in broad daylight and take his hand."
Mohiuddin's mother, Monowara Begum, demanded justice oover her son's killing, saying "I want justice for my son's murder. I want the killers to be hanged."
Inspector Romen Barua said that the murder might be linked to a drug-related dispute but the motive will be confirmed following a thorough investigation.
The body has been sent to Cumilla Medical College Hospital for autopsy and the police are working to apprehend those involved, added the police official.
