A well-timed global call to foster financial accountability

Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) and four UK-based anti-corruption organizations have issued a well-timed significant letter for global action to freeze and recover illicit assets held by Bangladeshi nationals abroad. Addressed to UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Affairs, this urgent plea emphasizes the critical need for decisive measures to combat corruption and foster global accountability.

However, the addressed joined letter highlights the pressing issue of illicit funds hidden in various countries, including the UK, US, Switzerland, EU, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and UAE. These nations, where illicit assets have been laundered, have now been asked to take action against misuse of their financial systems. Moreover, the letter also mentioned the need to reform key Bangladeshi institutions. It asked for assistance in strengthening the Anti-Corruption Commission, Financial Intelligence Unit, and other vital agencies. Effective reform within these institutions is essential for sustaining anti-corruption efforts and building a robust framework that upholds democratic values.

Coupled with TIB we also underscore the importance of this initiative, stressing that the countries harbouring these assets are not only development partners but must also commit to combat corruption. Their actions would unquestionably demonstrate their commitment to integrity and transparency, setting a precedent for global anti-corruption efforts.

Executive Director of Spotlight on Corruption, Susan Hawley also underpinned UK's crucial role in this battle while reminding that UK must honour its promises to assist developing nations like Bangladesh. She further asserted that UK needed to "put its money where its mouth is" reflects a broader expectation that developed countries should actively support anti-corruption initiatives while reinforcing the rule of law.

At the same time Transparency International UK has also made the call for global co-ordinated efforts. It urged the British government to collaborate with international allies and civil society in Bangladesh.

As Bangladesh uncovers extensive corruption from a recently ousted authoritarian government, demand and urgency to recover smuggled-out assets has intensified. This initiative aims not only to recover stolen assets but also to foster a new era of governance in Bangladesh-one characterized by transparency, accountability, and inclusivity.

In conclusion, the call to freeze illicit assets and bolster global anti-corruption measures marks a critical moment in the fight against global corruption. It offers a chance for the international community to demonstrate its commitment to justice and integrity. By supporting these efforts, nations can help Bangladesh pave the way for a brighter, more transparent future, where governance is grounded in accountability and the rule of law.

The time to act is now, and the world is watching.
