Dr SMA Faiz, a former professor of the Department of Soil, Water, and Environment at the Dhaka University, has been appointed as the chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC).
A gazette notification issued by the Secondary and Higher Education Division of the Ministry of Education in this regard on Thursday (September 5).
According to the notification, Prof Faiz will serve as UGC chairman for the next four years and will be entitled with all facilities, including salary, allowances and other benefits according to the rules of the commission.
Prof Faiz was also the former vice-chancellor of the Dhaka University from September 2002 until January 2009, and former chairman of the Bangladesh Public Service Commission.
Meanwhile, the post remained vacant after former UGC chairman Prof Kazi Shahidullah stepped down from his position, citing health reasons, following the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government on August 5.
