Number of unemployed people rises by 1.1m in April-June: BBS

The number of unemployed has increased by almost 11 lakh in three months from April to June in 2024 compared to the same period of the previous year. The number of unemployed in the country is now 20,64,000.

During this three month time, people eligible to join the work force has decreased by more than 9 lakh. The overall unemployment rate increased from 3.41 percent to 3.65 percent.

It was revealed in Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) quarterly labor force survey report presented on the basis of data collected from 1,23,264 farms in 1,284 sample areas on random basis across the country.

Employed is defined as people who have been engaged in productive work for at least 1 hour in the last 7 days for salary or wages or profit or for their own consumption of food. BBS adopted this definition following the guidelines of International Labor Organization (ILO).

Data analysis provided on BBS website shows that the number of people engaged in work in the country fell to 6,96,40,000 during the period from April to June. It was 7, 07, 10,000 during the same period of the previous financial year. 

According to this, employment has decreased by 10,70,000 in one year. Out of this, 3,30,000 jobs were lost for men and 7,40,000 jobs for women.

On the other hand, 1,40,000 working people became unemployed again in those three months. At this time, the number of unemployed people in the country stood at 26,40,000. 

The number of unemployed people was 25,00,000 during the same period last year. Earlier in the same quarter of 2016, there were 27,00,000 unemployed in the country.

A gender-based review shows unemployment rate among men rose to 3.85 percent in three months, the highest in 14 years. In all, the number of unemployed in the country is now 20,64,000.

According to the report, the number of new unemployed is higher among men. At that time, the number of unemployed men in the country was 18,50,000, which was 16,70,000 during the same period last year.
 
That is, male unemployment rose by 1,80,000. But surprisingly, unemployment among women decreased during this period compared to the previous period. 

Female unemployment fell from 8,30,000 to 7,90,000. Total unemployment is determined by averaging the decrease in unemployment among women and increase among men.

According to BBS definition of unemployed, unemployed are those people who have not worked for at least 1 hour in the last 7 days but was ready to work and in the last 30 days had sought some work for salary or wages or profit.
