Narayanganj tyre factory fire under control after 22hrs

The fire that broke out at a tyre manufacturing factory in Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj was brought under control after 22 hours on Monday evening.

Lt Col Md Rezaul Karim, director (training, planning and improvement) of Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) headquarters, said the fire broke out at the six-story building of Gazi Tyre Factory, owned by former lawmaker Gazi Golam Dastagir, around 9PM on Sunday.

A total of 12 units of firefighters rushed to the sport and were working to douse the flame. The firefighters managed to bring the fire under control around 7:05 PM on Monday.

He, however, said the cause of the fire and extent of damage could not be known immediately.
 Saiful Islam, assistant general manager of Gazi Tyres, said hundreds of people entered the factory breaking the main entrance in Rupshi area on Sunday afternoon, hours after the arrested of Golam Dastagir Gazi, the chairman of Gazi Group and former Awami League minister.

They set fire to the ground floor of the factory around 9PM.

Earlier, the fire service official said at least 174 people have been reported missing by their family members following the arson attack at the factory.

Locals said that after hearing the news of Gazi Golam Dastagir arrest, BNP and its associated bodies brought out joyous procession in Rupsi area. 

A group of people from the procession stormed into the factory and looted the machineries and furniture. Later, miscreants set fire to the the ground floor of the factory at around 9PM.
