The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) has directed banks and financial institutions to freeze the bank accounts of businessman Chowdhury Nafis Sharafat and former prime minister Sheikh Hasina's press secretary Nayeemul Islam Khan.
At the same time, the bank accounts of their wives, sons and daughters have been frozen.
The BFIU of the central bank issued a directive to different banks and financial institutions on Sunday (August 25).
Former banker Chowdhury Nafis Sharafat is the former chairman of Padma Bank (erstwhile Farmer's Bank). He is associated with resource management company Race. Besides, he is associated with different mobile tower companies, power companies, star hotel business, private university, mass media etc. He was known very close to former prime minister Sheikh Hasina. Using this relationship, he became a very powerful person in the country's financial sector.
Nayeemul Islam Khan is a senior journalist. He served as the press secretary to the prime minister until the fall of the Sheikh Hasina goverment on August 5 last.
