Heavy rain has started in Chattogram city from late night on Thursday. Various areas and lower parts in the city have been submerged due to the continuous rain. Road communication is being disrupted due to rising water on the roads.
Apart from low-lying areas in Chattogram, knee-to-waist water was seen on roads in various areas. This has caused extreme suffering to the workplace-oriented employees and the common people who go out for daily work.
The city's Chawkbazar, Muradpur, Bahaddarhat, Badurtala, Shulkabahar, Mohammadpur, Kapasgola, Katalganj, Bakalia, Chandgaon, Agrabad CDA residential area, Zakir Hossain Road, Pravartak Mor, DC Road, Halishahar Wapda, Chaktai-Khatunganj, Kalarpole, Boropole, Halishahar were waterlogged.
These areas have been seen, the main road has been submerged in water from knee to waist level. Most of the shops along the road are closed due to inundation. In addition, people living in the lower areas of the city have experienced extreme suffering due to water entering their homes.
Meanwhile, public transport crisis has arisen due to heavy rains. Office-going employees and ordinary people going out for urgent work are suffering due to the transport crisis. Commuters were seen standing for long periods of time at junctions of roads. Complaints against rickshaw-autorickshaw drivers for collecting double fare from fair fare.
Ibrahim Zulhaj Neel, a resident of Chawkbazar area, told The Daily Observer that waist-deep water has entered the house since last night. As the rain increases, the water rises. Due to the rapid rise of water, it was not possible to move the furniture of the house to a safe place. Everything is submerged in water. Even after passing the night with great difficulty, the water is not decreasing. Due to continuous rain, the water level is increasing.
According to the information of Meteorological Department, 141.8 mm of rainfall has been recorded in Chattogram in the last 24 hours.The agency has predicted that the rain will continue for at least another 48 hours.
On the other hand, fear of landslides due to heavy rainfall has created panic in the dangerous hills of the city. According to Hill Management Committee, there are 6,558 vulnerable settlements in 26 hills of the city. Families are living there with the risk of landslides in mind. They are yet to be evacuated to a safe haven.
A landslide warning has also been issued.
Kamal, a resident of Akbarshah Vijaynagar area, told The Daily Observer that thousands of people are in fear of landslides due to heavy rains. So far, the families living in the vulnerable hills have not been evacuated to safe places. If they are not quickly evacuated to a safe place, there is a risk of major casualties.
