BRAHMANBARIA, Aug 21: At least 10 villages and Akhaura Land Port have been flooded in Akhaura Upazila of the district due to heavy rains and onrush of water from India.

According to local and administrative sources, heavy rain started in Akhaura from Tuesday night. From Wednesday morning, water started entering at a rapid rate through the canal running along the side of the port.
Due to this, Akhaura Land Port and at least 10 villages including Bautala, Birchandrapur, Kalikapur, Bangerchar, Saheb Nagar were flooded.

The temporary bridge in Gazirbazar area was broken. Earlier on Tuesday, some parts of the Howrah River embankment broke and water started entering Khalapara area.

Dakshin Union Parishad Chairman Jalal Uddin said that Indian water started entering at a rapid rate in the morning. In addition to water rising in some villages, the temporary bridge of Akhaura-Agartala road was broken. The entire port area is now under water.

Akhaura Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Gazala Parvin said that a lot of cropland and several villages were submerged in water. Local people worked together to repair the part of dam. The Roads and Highways Department has been informed to repair the bridge. It will be made traffic-friendly soon.

All primary schools in the upazila have been prepared as shelters. Also, the upazila administration will arrange dry food for water-locked families, the UNO added.
