A case has been filed against 11 people, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, over the death of an auto-rickshaw driver named Shahabuddin in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area of the capital during the recent student movement.
Md Abul Kalam, father of the victim, appealed to the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Farah Diba Sonda for filing the case.
After evaluating the documents submitted before the court, the court accepted the statement of the plaintiff and asked the Sher-e Bangla Nagar Police Station to register the complaint as a First Information Report (FIR).
Other accused in the case are --- former road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former ICT state minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak, former law minister Anisul Huq, Sheikh Hasina's private industry and investment adviser Salman F Rahman, former foreign minister Hasan Mahmud, former state minister for information and broadcasting Mohammad Ali Arafat, former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, former additional IGP Harun-or-Rashid, former Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner Habibur Rahman and additional joint police commissioner Biplab Kumar.
According to the case statement, on August 5, Shahabuddin was shot in the head while he was going to get food for his family members at the West Agargaon intersection.
Locals rescued him and took him to the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Four more cases over murder, crimes against humanity and genocide and abduction have so far been filed against Sheikh Hasina since she was ousted from power in the face of the Quota Reform Movement.
