RAJSHAHI, Aug 12: In the face of student protests, Rajshahi College Principal Prof Md Abdul Khalek resigned from his position on Monday, citing 'mental pressure' as the reason for stepping down.
He submitted resignation letter to the Secretary of the Education Ministry.
However, Prof Abdul Khalek requested the ministry to appoint him as a teacher to Economics Department of either Rajshahi College or any other government college in Rajshahi.
In his letter, he mentioned that he suffers from chronic liver disease and diabetes and follows regular medication as advised by his doctor.
He said circumstances at the college led to excessive mental stress, exacerbating his physical problems and posing a risk to his health.
Earlier, students besieged the Principal's office demanding his resignation.
The protesters alleged that Prof Abdul Khalek had previously remained silent about abuses by the ruling party's student wing, Chhatra League, on the college campus.
"During the Quota Reform Movement, Chhatra League activists attacked Rajshahi College students in the presence of the Principal," they alleged.
This incident intensified the demand for his resignation.
