A youth, who was shot while making a TikTok video with a stolen firearm in Faridpur, died while undergoing treatment in Dhaka on Monday.
Palash Hossain, 18, got shot on August 6 and succumbed to his injuries at the ICU of Dhaka's Neuro Science Hospital on Monday morning (August 12).
According to the victim's family members, Palash was working at his father's restaurant when two of his friends, both 11th-grade students at Sadar Government College, took him to his grandfather's house in Arairashi village. The three friends then gathered in a room with a shotgun stolen from Sadarpur Police Station on August 5. While attempting to film a TikTok video, the weapon accidentally discharged, hitting Palash in head.
Palash was initially taken to a local hospital and later transferred to Faridpur Medical College Hospital as his condition worsened. Subsequently, Palash was moved to Dhaka Neuro Science Hospital, where he remained in the ICU for six days before passing away.
Locals confirmed that the shotgun used in the incident was stolen from Sadarpur Police Station on August 5, during an attack on the station amid ongoing protests. The weapon was later recovered by the Ansar forces in Atroshi and handed over to army.
Following the incident, Palash's two friends and their families went into hiding, making it difficult to obtain their statements. Palash's mother, Paruli Akter, claimed that her son was deliberately shot with the gun. However, due to disruption at the concerned police station, no legal action was initially taken.
Sadar Police Station officer-in-charge Md. Shafiqul Islam said that a murder case was filed against five individuals.
The body will be sent to Faridpur Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy, he said.
OC Islam added that the investigation would determine whether Palash's death was an accidental shooting during the TikTok video or a premeditated murder.
