Intercity trains to resume operations from Aug 15

Intercity train services across Bangladesh are set to resume on August 15.

Advance online ticket sales will begin at 5pm on Monday, according to Nahid Hasan Khan, a spokesperson for Bangladesh Railway.

"Freight trains will resume tomorrow (Monday), mail, local, express, and commuter trains from Aug 13, and all intercity trains from Aug 15," he told bdnews24.com, noting that the decision was made during a meeting at Rail Bhaban on Sunday.

Train operations across the country were halted on July 18 following widespread violence during the quota reform movement.

After a 13-day suspension, train services for short distances resumed on Aug 1, but operations were once again halted on Aug 3.

On July 16, during the quota reform protests, railways were blocked in Dhaka, Gazipur, Chattogram, Feni, Mymensingh, Rangpur, and other areas, disrupting train services for several hours. While operations resumed somewhat normally the following day, a complete shutdown was enforced on Jul 18.

Protesters set fire to railway tracks in Dhaka's Mohakhali and dismantled tracks in Narsingdi on the Tongi-Bhairab route. Railway lines were also blocked in various parts of the country outside Dhaka.

Amid security concerns, all train journeys on different routes were also cancelled.

After a week-long suspension, Bangladesh Railway announced a limited resumption of services from Jul 25.
However, no trains ran on that day.

The railways ministry decided to keep train services suspended across the country until the situation returned to normal.
