BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said on Friday that, "UN expressed willingness to give its full support to the new government of Bangladesh."
Speaking with journalists after meeting with United Nations Resident Coordinator Gwyn Lewis at BNP Chairpersons Gulshan office he said, "Many innocent people died under the Awami League's fascist rule to bring back democracy and voting right in the country."
"We achieved our second independence with strong support from the people and the international community, especially the United Nations. That is why we have no doubt about a fair election in Bangladesh," he said.
"Development partners of Bangladesh, who displayed concerns regarding the country's future, had their doubts dispelled today," he added.
Highlighting the need for the UN's support, Khasru said, "UN expresses willingness to give full support and are ready to work with everyone."
Gwyn Lewis said, "After the formation of the interim government led by Dr Yunus on Thursday, we discussed among ourselves. The UN expressed its support for this interim government in the talks."
"As part of this we are talking to all stakeholders- political parties, civil society representatives, organizations. Today we discussed with BNP," she added.
Gwyn Lewis said, "UN ready to build a bright future of Bangladesh, help in the investigation of the damage caused by the movement and how can we help in development priorities."
She said, "We will give this new interim government full support for the development of Bangladesh until the next election. We have discussed all these issues. We are hoping that the violence on the streets will stop and peace and order will return everywhere and the economic development of Bangladesh will go ahead."
"I came here this morning to meet my colleagues from the BNP. The UN plays an important role in supporting the transition of government," said Gwyn Lewis.
The party's Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, International Affairs Committee member Shama Obaid and UN Human Rights Specialist Huma Khan were at the meeting.
The UN will support the new interim government in the development of Bangladesh until the next elections.
