SANTHIA, PABNA, Aug 8: Jute growers in Santhia Upazila of the district are happy to get bumper production of jute. At present, growers are passing busy time in cutting, separating fibre and drying in the upazila.
According to sources at the Department of Agriculture Extension (DARE)-Santhia, this year, jute was cultivated on 7,410 hectares (ha) of land against the target of 7,940 ha, with jute production target of 26,676 metric tons (MT).
Farmers Alamgir Hossain of Gourigram Village and Abul Hossain of Ghughudah Village cultivated jute on two bighas of land each; farmer Abdul Baten of Konabaria Village farmed jute on six-bigha land.
According to them, per bigha farming cost stands at about Tk 15,000-18,000.
This year per bigha jute yielding stands at 8-10 maunds.
At present, per maund jute is selling at Tk 2,800 to 3,200.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Sanjib Kumar Goswami said, "This season we held yard meeting about pest attack and modern technology in each union; our sub-assistant agriculture officers regularly inspected fields and gave necessary advice about applications of fertiliser and insecticide."
In the absence of natural calamity, the jute production favoured by fair weather has been bumper.
