Use social media rationally

Dear Sir

Social media is an expressway of communication. There is no boundary that keeps us far from speaking our mind and remarking on our perspective if given the right to speak freely. But then, the ability to judge another being without his/her consent stands out amidst this exploitation of online networking.

Freedom of speech does not give you the power to snap random photographs and generate a biased viewpoint. My newsfeed on Facebook often shows a candid photograph of a servant, spotted sitting in a food court or a restaurant, with a lengthy caption about the inhumane conduct of the employer. The posts usually have more than 100 likes, several favourable comments and a number of shares.

In my opinion, these are two sides of the same coin. We never totally know the full story and, every so often, not even the half of it. Why rush to condemn someone on the basis of our perception being unaware of the details? It has become so natural to criticise each other that the pattern has gotten solidified. I ask people to limit themselves and stop being so judgmental. We never know how the employers sustained them before or how well they treat them. Let us simply do great deeds and advance them as opposed to criticising everything under the sun.

S Khan
