6 AL leader killed during clash with students in Narsingdi

At least six local Awami Leader (AL) were killed and dozens injured during a violent clash with students in Narsingdi district on Sunday, first day of the non-cooperation movement led by the anti-discrimination student protesters.

The clash broke out around 1.30pm at Madhabdi bus stand area in Narsingdi Sadar upazila. Additionally, four protesters were injured by gunfire.

Madhabdi Police Station OC Kamruzzaman confirmed the deaths.

The deceased were identified as the Chairman of Char Dighaldi Union Parishad and Awami League leader Delwar Hossain, 40, Jubo League leader Delwar Hossain, 38, former District Council member and Sramik League leaders-- Moniruzzaman Bhuiyan alias Nati Monir, 42, Anisur Rahman Sohel, 40, Nausher, 40, Ward Commissioner of Madhabdi municipality ward No. 11, and an unidentified individual, 38.

According to reports, the clash began when Awami League members fired indiscriminately at a procession of student protesters. At least six people were shot and injured. Among the injured, Suman Mia, 35, Soheb, 41, and Al Amin, 25, were taken to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital, while Mir Jahangir, 30, was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Amid the chaos, around 4,000-5,000 protesters headed towards the Awami League supporters, who eventually fled. Six Awami League members took shelter in a mosque near the Madhabdi bus stand but were dragged out by the protesters and beaten to death on the spot.

Additionally, a large number of students and locals gathered at the Jailkhana Mor area of Narsingdi town, leading a protest march from Jailkhana intersection to Narsingdi Stadium around 1pm. 

The crowd continued to grow as the day progressed.
