100 injured in student-police-AL activist clashes across country

Over 100 people were injured during clashes between the protesting students and police and ruling party activates in different parts of the country on Saturday. 

Thousands of people join rallies across the country including the capital city, protesting the killings during the quota reform protests and release of all the arrested and detained students and people.
The residence of Education Minister Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury came under attack allegedly  by miscreants. Miscreants also vandalised and torched the office of Awami League lawmaker from Chattogram-10 Md Mohiuddin Bachchu in the port city's Lalkhan Bazar areas on Saturday evening.

The organisers of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, who spearheaded the quota reform protests, urged all to join their programmes to make it successful to press home their nine-point demand.

Thousands of students have been protesting at Shahbagh, Mirpur-10, Rampura, Badda, and Science Lab Intersection and other places, blocking the roads, since Saturday morning. Several thousand protesters including students, who blocked the Science Lab Intersection and Shahbagh, marched to the Central Shaheed Minar.  

Protesters have blocked Mirpur-10 Intersection halting traffic to Pallabi, Farmgate, Mirpur-1 and Mirpur-14 areas in the capital. The protesters occupied road in Mirpur-10 from 2:00pm on Saturday. Vehicular movement from Mirput-10 to Agargaon came to a halt at around 4:30pm.

Our Chattogram Staff Correspondent reports the residence of Education Minister Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury came under attack allegedly by a section of protesters from a procession of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Chattogram city's Sholoshahar area on Saturday  evening.

Eyewitnesses said two cars have been vandalized in the attack and one has been set on fire. They also vandalized some furniture and windows during the attack around 6:30pm. Miscreants also vandalised and torched the office of Awami League lawmaker from Chattogram-10 Md Mohiuddin Bachchu in the port city's Lalkhan Bazar areas in the evening.

Witnesses said after holding a rally at New Market Intersection in Chattogram city, thousands of students and mass people brought out a procession towards Tiger Pass areas around 5:30pm.

When the procession reached Lalkhan Bazar, the office of Mohiuddin Bachchu came under attack. The attackers vandalised the furniture of two rooms and later set those on fire, said witnesses.

Sidraturl Rahi, a witness, said when the procession reached the AL MP's office, 8 to 10 people from the procession entered the office and carried out the vandalism and arson. The attackers were not students, Rahi added.

Earlier, around 2:30pm, responding to the protest programme called by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, thousands of students and mass people gathered at New Market Intersection.  During the gathering, they chanted slogans: "We want justice. 'Down with dictatorship."

After a rally at the New Market area, they brought out a procession towards Tiger Pass and Lalkhan Bazar areas. During the visit, the correspondent found that there was no presence of law enforcers around the protest sites.

Our Cumilla Correspondent writes at least 30 people were injured during a clash between the protesting students and Bangladesh Chhatra League activists in Cumilla on Saturday. 

Among the injured, seven were reportedly shot, according to the protesting students. The injured were taken to hospitals in the city.

The students who sustained bullet wounds are Arfan Mazumder, 16, Sourav, 25, Maruf, 16, Asif, 11, Mridul, 12, Sujon, 13, Sanny, 18.

One of the injured, Sourav was referred to Dhaka while the remaining injured underwent treatment at the Cumilla Medical College Hospital (CMCH). Many of the injured returned home after receiving first aid.

Witnesses and students said around 10:00am students gathered outside Cumilla Zilla School for a protest march. 

Activists from the Metropolitan Awami League, Jubo League, Chhatra League, and Swechchhasebak League gathered in the New Market and Stadium areas and dispersed the students by chasing them away.

When the students attempted to march towards the Police Lines via Fouzderi Roundabout, Awami League activists began pelting them with bricks and stones. Gunfire was also heard during the skirmishes.

The students claimed that over 50 of their peers were injured, with at least seven being shot. The injured were then taken to various hospitals in Cumilla, with six of the gunshot victims admitted to Cumilla Medical College Hospital.

In the wake of the attack, many students fled to save their lives, with several female students seeking refuge inside the Police Lines. The Police later evacuated them from the area in police vans.

Several protesting students said they had gathered for a peaceful demonstration to demand justice for the killing of their fellow students.

Our Tangail Correspondent adds at least 15 people were injured in a clash between protesters and members of the Chhatra League in Sakhipur upazila of Tangail.

Thousands of students and local residents gathered on the Dhaka-Tangail-Bangabandhu Bridge Highway in the morning, protesting attacks on students and for advocating their nine-point demand.

They blocked the Ashekpur Bypass area around 1:30pm on Saturday, causing a halt in traffic flow. A chase and counter-chase took place between the protesting students and BCL men. Police reportedly fire tear gas to control the situation.

Our Rajshahi Correspondent writes protesters blocked the Rajshahi-Dhaka Highway on Saturday part of the protest programme announced by Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

Students from Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET), Rajshahi University (RU) and general people blocked the highway defying rains and chanted various anti-government slogans at around 10:30am. 

Later, teachers, lawyers and workers also joined the protest programme to extend solidarity with their demands.

Dr Saleh Hasan Nakib, a Physics Department teacher of Rajshahi University (RU), said the place turned into a human sea with the participation of general people, teachers and lawyers.  Members of law enforcement agencies were present but did not obstruct the protesters.

Our Faridpur Correspondent reports several people including police personnel were injured in a clash between protesters and police during demonstrations at Faridpur demanding justice for recent killings on Saturday. 

Around 11:00am, the students of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical College gathered on their campus for a protest march around 11:00am and then students of other educational institutions joined. The procession towards the Bhanga Road Intersection via the Dhaka-Barisal Highway.
 
When the protesters reached Goalachamot Model Mosque area near old bus stand, the police attempted to block their path, leading to a chase and counter-chase.

Our Sirajganj Correspondent adds several hundreds of students from Sirajganj staged a protest march blocking the Bogura-Nagarbari Highway as part of the central programme of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement on Saturday.

The agitated students occupied the highway at Science College Intersection from 11:00am to 1:30pm chanting various slogans for their single demand.

People from different classes and professions joined the protest march. The march circled the highway and then staged a sit in front of the college, causing traffic to come to a standstill on both sides of the road.  Despite the police being on high alert, they did not interfere with the march.

Protesters said they will continue their movement until their nine demands are met and warned that if those involved in the attacks on general students are not arrested quickly, they will announce more stringent programmes.

In this regard, Ullapara Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Asif Mohammad Siddikul Islam, that they are observing the situation to ensure that students do not get involved in any untoward incidents.

Our Gazipur Correspondent reports the protesting students, Awami League activists, and police engaged in a widespread clashes at Gazipur's Sreepur upazila on Saturday.

Following these incidents, the agitated students torched two police vehicles and a police box on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway at Maona union of the upazila, alleged police sources. In response, police fired rubber bullets and tear shells, they added.

Locals said the protesting students gathered at Palli Bidyut Intersection of the union around 11:00am on Saturday. A tense situation was prevailing in the area as a huge numbers of Awami League activists gathered under the Maona Flyover. 

After some time, the students marched towards the flyover, chanting slogans like "Fake, Fake" and returned. But shortly after that the situation worsened when AL activists started their own march.
 
As the situation intensified, police chased the students on the Maona-Sreepur Road, using tear shells which led to a series of chases and counter-chases between the two groups.  

During the clashes, three police boxes belonging to Highway Police, Gazipur District Police, and Sreepur Thana Police were vandilised and several vehicles, including two police vehicles, were torched.

Our Sylhet Correspondent reports police fired sound grenades, rubber bullets and tear shells to disperse protesters during a clash in Sylhet on Saturday. No casualties, however, were reported so far.

Witnesses said protesting students gathered in front of the Shaheed Minar in Chawhatta area of the city at noon as part of the scheduled programme announced by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

They blocked the Zindabazar-Chawhatta Road and halted all traffic movement. Police asked them to move from the road, creating confrontation between the two groups.

Agitated students threw brick chips at the police, leading to a clash. Later, the law enforcers started firing tear shells, sound grenades and rubber bullets.  The protesters entered into different alleys and continued throwing bricks at the police.

Our Bogura Correspondent writes a violent clash between student protesters and police broke out on Saturday in Bogura's Zero Point, Satmatha and surrounding areas.

Despite rain, thousands of students gathered at the city's central Satmatha area starting from 3:00pm as part of the protest. 

The students' presence led to a complete halt in vehicular traffic movement in Satmatha, and locals were also seen joining the protest.

From the Jaleswaritala area, students and their guardians joined the march, while a large procession from the Borogola area converged at Satmatha, chanting various slogans. The students occupying Satmatha blocked all vehicles heading towards that area.
