Clashes erupt at Sreepur, police vehicles torched

The protesting students, Awami League activists, and police engaged in a widespread clashes at Gazipur's Sreepur upazila on Saturday.

Following these incidents, the agitated students torched two police vehicles and a police box on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway at Maona union of the upazila, alleged police sources.
In response, police fired rubber bullets and tear shells, they added.

Locals said that the protesting students gathered at Palli Bidyut intersection area of the union around 11am on Saturday. A tense situation was prevailing in the area as a huge numbers of Awami League activists gathered under the Maona flyover. 

After some time, the students marched towards the flyover area, chanting slogans like "Fake, fake" and returned. 

But shortly after that the situation worsened when AL activists started their own march. 

As the situation intensified, police chased the students on the Maona-Sreepur road, using tear shells which led to a series of chases and counter-chases between the two groups.

During the clashes, three police boxes belonging to Highway Police, Gazipur District Police, and Sreepur Thana Police. were vandilised and several vehicles, including two police vehicles, were torched.

To bring the situation under control, police fired more tear shells and rubber bullets. The protest spread around the entire Maona Chaurasta area, with general people joining the students' protest.

The protesting said, "We will remain on the streets until justice is served for the killing of our brothers. There will be no compromise with those whose hands are stained with our brothers' blood."

"We stand with the central decision of the anti-discrimination student movement. The movement will continue until all our demands are met," added the protesting students.

Gazipur Superintendent of Police Kazi Shafiul Alam said, "Miscreants have set fire to police vehicles and a police box. Police are working to bring the situation under control."
