At least 26 people were injured during a clash between the protesting students and Bangladesh Chhatra League activists in Cumilla on Saturday.
Five of them, who were reportedly received gunshots during the demonstration, have been admitted to Cumilla Medical College Hospital.
Sources said agitating students gathered in front of the Cumilla District School at 11am and started demonstration. BCL leaders and activists also took position at Kandirpar Liberty intersection and Pubali Square areas.
At one stage, BCL men and the police chased the protesters in front of the Police Line intersection and District School around 1pm. They said police were seen firing blanks towards the students. During the attack five people were shot and several others were injured.
The students alleged that BCL activists attacked them with lethal weapons and sticks on their peaceful protest programme without any provocation.
Cumilla Additional Superintendent of Police Ashfaquzzaman said that they safely moved the general students and did not attack them.
Meanwhile, Nur Mohammad Sohel, president of the metropolitan Chhatra League, has also denied the allegations of shooting during the procession.
He alleged that Jamaat-Shibir was leading the movement under the guise of general students, so the peace-loving students resisted them.
