RAJSHAHI, July 30: Business losses of at least Tk 500 crore were registered in the the district in the last one week due to quota movement.
If this damaging trend continues small and large businessmen will fall into long-term loss-making conditions. It was feared by businessmen in Rajshahi.
On July 18, like elsewhere in the country shutdown began in Rajshahi; after two days, curfew was imposed; so businesses in the district have come to a standstill.
At present, shopping malls and small shops are remaining closed for most of the time.
Manager of Rajshahi Gene X Showroom Lutfor Rahman said, "No man! Roads look desert; we are passing a deadly time."
Shopper Sirajul Islam of RDA Market said, "Businesses have been very dull for the last eight days; sales resumed on Sunday; but the sale is very bad; I can't understand how to pay shop rent and employee salaries."
President of Rajshahi Businessmen Oikkyo Parishad Farid Mamud Hasan said, "Time has been fixed amid curfew; we businessmen have fallen into loss-making; it is difficult to overcome the instability."
Masudur Rahman Rinku, president of Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce & Industry, said, in the last one week, the business loss was estimated at Tk 500 crore.
Amid the relaxed curfew, per day business is Tk 50,000-60,000, he added.
A spokesperson of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Md Jamirul Islam said, "We are considering various information including intelligence one; we are also receiving information from other administrations; and, in the consideration of the current situation, a decision is being taken about relaxing the curfew.'
