21 unclaimed bodies buried, all found bullet-ridden

Without tracing the identities, the unclaimed dead bodies of 21 people have been handed over to Anjuman Mufidul Islam for burial from three hospitals in the capital.

Sources at the morgues concerned say that most of the unclaimed dead bodies were bullet-ridden, while several had multiple injuries.

Eight unclaimed bodies were handed over to Anjuman Mufidul Islam from the Dhaka Medical College morgue from Monday to Wednesday last. Besides, police handed over 13 more bodies from Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Sir Salimullah Medical College morgues for burial. Later, Anjuman Mufidul Islam buried those unclaimed dead bodies at Rayerbazar Graveyard at Mohammadpur under the Dhaka North City Corporation.

When asked about the condition of the dead bodies, Dhaka Medical College morgue's dome Babul said, "Bullets pierced through  some of the bodies, while some were found bullet-ridden. Condition of each of the bodies was almost same which were sent here during the last couple of days movement. All had received bullets either on chest or head. None of the dead bodies bore the marks of sharp weapon or any other injuries. The unclaimed bodies which were given to Anjuman Mufidul Islam also had the same condition.

Anjuman's burial service officer Kamrul Ahmed said," Twenty-one dead bodies have been given to us for burial from the Dhaka Medical College, Salim Ullah Medical College and Shahid Suhrawardy Medical College morgue for burial through police. Police also gave us death certificates and some photographs of the dead bodies. However, no copy of postmortem was given us. We have buries the dead bodies as part of our regular work."

Sources said nine bodies including of a child were handed over to Anjuman from Dhaka Medical College and Suhrawardy Medical College morgues on Monday last. All of them were killed during the Quota Reform Movement. On the following day, Anjuman received another body from Salimullah Medical College morgue. On Thursday, nine more unclaimed bodies were handed over to Anjuman.

Police claimed that they hurriedly handed over eight unclaimed bodies from the Dhaka Medical College morgue to Anjuman as the bodies started decomposing.  

It is learnt that among the untraced bodies received from the Dhaka Medical College morgue, one was 22 years of age, another 25 years of age, another was 28 years of age, two were 30 years of age, one was 35 years of age and one was 50 years of age. The photographs of the dead bodies have been kept at the morgue. 

Besides, the DNA samples were preserved during the postmortem.

Sources said40 dead bodies can be kept at the DMC Morgue. Now, eight more unclaimed bodies of other incidents have been kept at the morgue. These bodies would be handed over to Anjuman  for burial on Sunday.
