Muhith for establishing training institute to develop skill

Finance Minister AMA Muhith today urged the international donor agencies, including International Labour Organisation (ILO), to establish a training institute for enhancing the skilled workforce in the country to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

"The institute will provide necessary training to the workers, professionals and managers for raising their working skills," he said while addressing as the chief guest the concluding session of "Dhaka Summit on Skills, Employability and Decent Work-2016" at a city hotel.

Labour and Employment Ministry, Bangladesh Employers' Federation (BEF) and National Coordination Committee for Workers Education (NCCWE) with cooperation of the a2i programme of the Prime Minister's office organised the three-day summit.

Among others, Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed, State Minister for Labour and Employment M Mujibul Haque and ILO Assistant Director General and Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific Tomoko Nishimoto were present on the occasion.

Muhith said the government is providing all sorts of efforts under the Seventh Five Year Plan to develop the country's workforce skills saying the government has already formed a fund titled "National Human Resource Fund" of Taka 100 crore to provide necessary training to the workforce.

The government is also providing special focus on employment generate to the country, he said adding, "If we can generate the workforce, we will produce more goods and services."

Tofail Ahmed said the government is working to develop the skills of the workforce for diversifying the export which has been taken under the Seventh Five Year Plan.

Mujibul Haque assured the participants that the government would work to implement the recommendations of the summits.

Chief Executive Officer of National Skills Development Council ABM Khorshed Alam presided the session.

Earlier on December 11, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the summit at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the city.

The summit comprised four technical sessions which discussed various issues including the importance of efficiency for decent employment, youth employment, development of silks of people with disabilities and self-employment.

The summit also discussed many other issues like challenges for Bangladesh to cope with management of decent job supply, labour-owner relations in factories, safe work environment and social communication.
