Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) has sent back at least 96 Rohingyas while they were trying to enter Bangladesh to escape persecution in Myanmar's Rakhine state.

BGB officials have told bdnews24.com these Rohingyas tried to sneak in through three points of the Naf River in Cox’s Bazar’s Teknaf Upazila early on Tuesday.

In the twelve hours from 7am on Monday, at least 26 Rohingyas tried to enter Bangladesh illegally through different border points of Ukhia Upazila, said Cox’s Bazar-based BGB-34 Battalion’s Commander Lt Col Imran Ullah Sarker.

“BGB patrol teams pushed them back into Myanmar,” he said.

Seven boats carrying more than 70 Rohingya Muslims also tried to enter Bangladesh's territorial waters through Naf River, said Teknaf-based BGB-2 Battalion’s Major Md Abu Russel Siddiqui.

“Each boat carried around 15 passengers. BGB patrols thwarted their attempts to enter Bangladesh,” said the BGB official.

Major Russel said a total 70 boats carrying Rohingyas have been intercepted while trying to enter the country through different points of the Naf River since Dec 1.

A Myanmar army crackdown started on the Rohingya community after “insurgents” killed nine police officers at posts along Myanmar-Bangladesh border on Oct 9.

Since then, they have been trying to flee from the volatile Rakhine state and take refuge inside Bangladesh.

Those who have managed to cross the border and sneak into Bangladesh have narrated harrowing tales of extra-judicial killings, rapes, torture and burning down of whole villages in Rakhine state.
