Broadband internet services has been restored on test basis after five-days on Tuesday midnight.
However, operation of the social media would remain restricted for indefinite period until further notice.
While visiting the Mahakhali data center of the Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Ltd (BSCCL) under the Post and Telecommunication Ministry, State Minister ICT and Telecom Zunaid Ahmed Palak said the connectivity of the data center could be restored finally. As a result, the authority has decided to restore the internet services on test basis.
Though the internet service will resume from Tuesday midnight (from Wednesday), the social media sites would remain restricted until further notice. Decision on social media sites and mobile internet services will be taken later gradually considering the overall situation, he added.
Regarding the restoration of internet services, Internet Service Providers Association of Bangladesh (ISPAB) President Imdadul Haque told media that initially the services for broadband internet would be restored on test basis. However, the social media would remain restricted.
As the mobile internet service is still suspended, there will be some pressure on the broadband internet services, he added.
Some miscreants have attacked and set fire to the Department of Disaster Management Bhaban at Mahakhali in the city on July 19, Friday.
The data centre of the BSCCL is located in the Disaster Management Bhaban.
During the attack and fire incident, the data centre has been damaged severely while the connections and cables of the centre were cut. As a result, the government had to suspend operation of broadband internet services. After repairing the system, the government decided to start internet services on test basis.
