Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists attacked on quota protesters at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) early Monday when they were protesting over Prime Minister Sheikh Hasin's comment on quota.
Three students were injured in the attack that took place around 12:30am in front of central library of the university.
The students announced a demonstration on the campus on Monday Morning protesting the attack.
The injured students are Delwar Hossain, a postgraduate student of the English department, Asadullah Ghalib, a postgraduate student of the Chemistry department, and Hafizul Islam, a third-year student of the Mathematics department.
They have been admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
Earlier, the students started a protest procession on the campus at around 11:30 pm on Sunday, claiming that the agitators demanding reform of the quota system in government jobs were insulted.
Around two thousands students joined the procession heading towards the students halls. Later, the procession passed through the student halls and came towards central library chanting various slogans including 'Chaite Gelam Odhikar, Hoyegelam Razakar', 'Tumi K? Ami K? / Razakar, Razakar', 'Medha na Kotha? / Medha Medha'.
Meanwhile, a procession of university unit BCL leaders and activists led by president Khalilur Rahman and general secretary Sojibur Rahman brought out from Shahparan hall chanting 'Amar Sonar Banglay Razakarer Thai Nai'.
At one point the two sides faced each other in front of the central library building. Chhattra League leaders and workers tried to stop the agitators by creating a human wall.
However, when general students attempted to ignore the Chhattra League obstacles and move forward, Chhattra League leaders beat up some of the students.
Asadullah Al Ghalib, an injured student in the attack, said, "We were peacefully protesting on the campus. In the meantime, we got news that some brothers in the hall who are interested in coming to the procession are being prevented from coming by the Chhattra League. So when we were heading towards the residential student hall, the Chhattra League leaders and workers stopped our march and attacked.
However, SUST Chhattra League President Khalilur Rahman has denied the allegations of attack. He said, "There was no incident of attack. Everyone has video footage''.
In this regard, the proctor of the University, Kamruzzaman Chowdhury said, 'When two sides faced each other, tensions arose but it became normal. Students did not report any injuries. The situation on the campus is now normal.'
