The Ganges River is swelling and the trend and may continue for next 72 hours.

Given the trend, floods on its banks might aggravate, according to a bulletin of Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) under the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB).

Besides, the Padma, the Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar in the Northern region may remain steady and the floods in some low-lying areas adjacent to Dudhkumar River in  Kurigram district may remain steady in next 24 hours.

Except those rivers, the water level of all other rivers have been falling and the flood situation in the regions started improving gradually, according to the FFWC report.

The bulletin stated that the water level on the Brahmaputra-Jamuna rivers are in falling trend which may continue in next 72 hours while the major rivers in the North-eastern region of the country are in falling trend overall and may continue in next 48 hours.

It stated that in the next 48 hours, flood situation at low-lying areas adjacent to Brahmaputra-Jamuna
river of Kurigram, Jamalpur, Gaibandha, Bogura, Tangail and Sirajganj districts may improve and the Padma river at Goalundo point may flow at its warning level.

In next 24 hours, the water of the rivers in Northern and North-western regions may fall except the Mohananda.

In next 24 hours, the flood situation of low-lying areas of Sirajganj district along the Atrai river may slowly improve in the North-western region of the country while the overall flood situation in different low-lying areas of North-eastern region of the country may improve, the FFWC stated.

Our Correspondent from Sunamganj reports that as the effects of the second round of flooding were just beginning to subside, heavy rainfall and water from the upstream have once again flooded fresh areas in the district.

Although rainfall decreased from Friday night, leading to a slight drop in water levels, new areas in the low-lying regions of Bishwambharpur and Tahirpur upazilas have been submerged due to upstream waters.

The BWDB stated that as of 9:00am on Saturday, water level at the Shologhor point in Sunamganj town was flowing 13 centimetres below the danger level. Due to the relatively lower rainfall, the water level at the Shologhar point of the Surma River in the municipal town has decreased by 39 centimetres.

Despite the decrease in the Surma Rivers water level, road communication remains severed as the Tahirpur-Sunamganj road is still underwater.

Rising water level in the Boulai River has caused rapid water flow over rural roads in Chiksa and Hosenpur villages in Tahirpur Sadar Union towards the haor, halting vehicle movement.

The prolonged flooding has severely impacted the lives and livelihoods of the people in this area.

Abdul Nur, a resident of Sadar upazila, said, "We have no place to stay due to the floodwaters.

Theres nothing left in the house to eat."  "I haven been able to work for a long time. Almost everyone in our village is in the same situation. No one is at peace," he added.

Faisal Ahmed, a resident of Tahirpur upazila, said, "We are completely exhausted from the floodwaters every couple of days. We don know when we will get relief from the floods."

"All our household items are getting ruined. I haven been able to take my CNG auto-rickshaw out of the house for three days. Its submerged in water. Im worried about how much it will cost to fix the vehicle after the flood subsides and where I will get the money," he added.

Mamun Howladar, executive engineer of the Sunamganj Water Development Board, said, "Due to the rainfall in Sunamganj and Cherapunji in India, the water level in the Surma River has flowed above the danger level. Although the water level in the river has decreased significantly due to reduced rainfall last night, the flood situation will worsen again if it rains."

Our Correspondent from Tangail reports that thousands of people remain trapped in the Tangail flood despite the river water starting to recede.

In the last 24 hours, the Jamuna, Jhenai, and Dhaleshwari riverss water have receded. However, houses, markets, educational institutions, croplands, and other establishments in several upazilas of the district have been flooded. Educational institutions affected by the floods have been closed.

According to the BWDBs Tangail office, the water level of the Jamuna River has decreased by 13cm at Jokarchar point while flowing 79cm above the danger level.

The water level of the Dhaleshwari River has decreased by 13cm at Porabari point and flowing 23cm above the danger level at Elasin point.

Meanwhile, the water levels of the Fatikjani and Bangshai rivers have increased but are still flowing below the danger level.
