Quota protesters block highways, railways for 2nd day in a row

Quota protesters on Monday blocked highways and railways across the country and major intersections in the capital for the second consecutive day, demanding legislation by parliament, abolishing quotas in government jobs.

Key coordinators of the movement met law enforcers for the second time on Monday.

However, the coordinators declined to disclose the outcome of their discussions.

The protesters on Monday formed a 65-member coordinating committee, to strengthen the movement in an organised way.

They named 23 of them  as coordinators and  42 as assistant coordinators.

Naming the countrywide blockade, Bangla Blockade, Hasnat Abdullah said there will be no blockade on Tuesday.

"We will make mass campaign on Tuesday and  announce a fresh programme later, " Hasnat Abdullah told the Daily Observer.

Students have been refraining from attending classes and examinations.  

On Monday, protesting students blocked major intersections in the capital including Shahbagh, Nilkhet, Science Lab, Bakshi Bazar, Karwan Bazar, Bangla Motor, Chankharpool, Agargaon, Hotel Intercontinental, Paltan and Mohakhali.

Hundreds of students gathered in front of the Dhaka University Central Library at 3:30 pm and in a procession paraded several streets on the campus.

They blocked the Shahbagh Intersection at 4:00pm. The blockade was lifted at around 8:00pm.

Meanwhile, a section of DU students blocked the Chankharpul Intersection at around 3:30pm.

Another group of students including students of Dhaka College blocked the Science Lab area at around 3:50pm.

At around 4:15pm, students of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University blocked the road close to their campus at Agargaon.

Meanwhile, some other students blocked the Paltan Intersection in the capital at around 5:00pm.

Students halted the railway communication between Dhaka and most other parts of the country blocking the Karwan Bazar level-crossing in the capital at 6:40 pm.

The rail communication was restored at around 7:30pm.

Hundreds of students of Rajshahi University blocked the Dhaka-Rajshahi railway line for four and a half hours demanding abolition of quotas in government jobs.

The blockade was lifted at around 4:00pm.

The students began the protests by taking out a procession from Paris Road on the campus. Later the procession passed by  academic buildings before reaching the railway line, close the campus, which they blocked at 11:30am.

Our Jahangirnagar University Correspondent reported that students of the university blocked the Dhaka-Aricha Highway on Monday in protest against restoration of quotas in  government jobs.

Under the banner of Anti-discriminatory Student Movement, the protesters assembled on  the Central Library premises of the university at 3pm.

later, the protesters blocked both the lanes of the Dhaka-Aricha Highway near the universitys main entrance at around 3:20pm.

The blockade was lifted at 7:00pm, but the protesters warned that  a more intense movement will begin today unless their demands were met.

Our Jagannath University Correspondent reported that students of the university blocked Zero Point in the city  defying barricades set up by the police.

Beginning at 3:00pm, the demonstrators gathered at Tantibazar Bazar and marched to Gulistan. Defying resistance put up by the police the students held sit-in demonstrations at the Zero Point.

Students of Barishal University blocked the Barishal-Kuakata Highway close to their campus for three hours on Monday noon.

Students left the road at around 3:00pm.

Students of Cumilla University, under the banner of "Bangla Blockade", blocked the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway on Monday afternoon.

Traffic movement came to a halt on both sides of the highway due to the blockade.

Students of Chittagong University blocked the Dhaka-Coxs Bazar railway at 4:00pm for half an hour.

Bangladesh Agricultural University students blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh railway at 1:00pm.

Job aspirants students have been holding demonstrations by blocking highways and railways since July 1, to press home their demand of introduction of merit-based recruitment and abolition of quotas in government jobs.

In the wake of a mass movement in 2018, the Public Administration Ministry issued a circular on October 4 abolishing quotas in first and second class government jobs.

Following a writ petition, the High Court Division on June 5, 2024 declared as invalid the circular issued in 2018 abolishing quotas in government jobs.

On July 4, the Appellate Division upheld the decision of the High Court Division.
