Public university teachers, after a two-day break, will resume their hour-long sit-in demonstration on their respective campuses today to press the demand for withdrawal of the Universal Pension Scheme Prottoy, Federation of Public University Teachers Association General Secretary Prof Md Nizamul Haque Bhuiyan told reporters on Saturday.
On Thursday, Prof Nizam said that no sit-in demonstrations would be held on July 5 and 6.
On Thursday, ruling Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader postponed a scheduled meeting with the public university teachers saying that he had a meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on the Padma Bridge.
Teachers, officers and employees of at least 35 public universities have been abstaining from academic and administrative duties since July 1, demanding withdrawal of the Prottoy Scheme branding it illogical and discriminatory.
They have been holding hour-long sit-in protests everyday.
The Finance Ministry, in a notification on March 13, announced that all officers and employees joining autonomous, self-governing, nationalised, statutory or similar organisations and their subordinate institutions on or after July 1, 2024, would be included in Prottoy Scheme under the Universal Pension Scheme.
Since the announcement by the Finance Ministry, teachers, officers and employees of public universities held protest demonstrations on campuses across the country.
