SANTHIA, PABNA, July 5: Academic activities of Umme Kulsum Girls High School in Santhia Upazila of the district are hampered due to lack of a pucca Bhaban.
This school was established 52 years back in Gourigram Village in the upazila.
Since the inception, the school has been running in two shabby tin-shed houses having seven rooms. Teachers and students demanded a pucca building for the school to get rid of their long sufferings.
Late Taleb Ali Khan had established the school on April 9 in 1972. It was MPO (Monthly Pay Order)-enlisted on January 1 in 1986.
There are about 200 students, ten teachers and four employees in the school. Of the seven rooms, one is used as store room and one as teachers sitting room while remaining five ones are used for class-taking.
The school also lacks science laboratory, library, and necessary tools including chair-table. In the absence of boundary walls, students face insecurity.
The tin houses have been rickety while windows are broken. Heat causes hiccupping to students and teachers.
When rain drops in the classrooms, students have to attend classes in bulged room conditions. Sometimes, valuable things including documents get bulged.
Students Summa Khatun, Ria Khatun, and Taslima Khatun said, "We have to hiccup due to heat; when there is cloud in the sky, we scare; to save our books and khatas, we don feel it safe to come to school."
Senior Teacher Abdul Jabbar said, "We get to tough to take classes because of heat; many students leave school amid warming; we remain in panic when it is storm."
Head Teacher Abdur Razzak said, "Through Upazila Secondary Education Office, we have applied to the Education Ministry and Education Bhaban for Pucca Bhaban several times; but we are getting no update."
"Due to lack of pucca Bhaban, many guardians don want to admit their children to the school despite availability of experienced teachers," he added.
Santhia Upazila Education Officer Abdul Quader Biswas confirmed the worse condition of the school.
"The school needs a pucca building urgently," the official added.
