A Malaysian
expatriate reportedly committed
suicide by hanging himself at Santhia upazila in
Pabna district on Wednesday morning.
The deceased youth was Jahidul Islam, 24, son of Shukchand Ali from Rasulpur village under Khetupara union of the upazila. He was a migrant worker who had returned home from Malaysia on March 2024.
According to local and family members, Jahidul had gone to Malaysia about a year ago taking loans from various people. About three months ago, he fell victim to a gang (oggyan party) in Malaysia and lost all his earned money, which left him mentally distressed.
Consequently, being unable to repay the loans and lacking of the money to go abroad again, he started suffering from anxiety and depression, they said.
On Tuesday night, Jahidul left the house around 11pm after having dinner with the family members and didn't returned home.
Later, the family members found him hanging from a branch of a mangoo tree around 6am on Wednesday.
Confirming the matter, Santhia Police Station officer-in-charge Anwar Hossain said being informed, they recovered the body from the spot and sent to Pabna General Hospital morgue for autopsy.
An unnatural death case has been filed in this regard and legal action will be taken upon autopsy report, added the OC.
