Hangman Shahjahan passes away

Shajahan Bhuiyan, popularly known as 'Jallad (executioner) Shajahan', passed away at a hospital in the capital on Monday.

Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station inspector Sajib Dey said Shahjahan was brought to Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital from Hemayetpur area in the capital by his landlord after experiencing chest pain around 5am. Upon arrival at the hospital, the on-duty doctors declared him dead, he said.

Shahjahan, in his mid-70s, was released on June 18 last year after serving over three decades in prison.

Shahjahan Bhuiyan was known for executing 26 high-profile convicts, including the six assassins of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, six war criminals, the notorious terrorist Ershad Shikder, militant leader Bangla Bhai, Ataur Rahman Sani, Khuku Moni who was convict in the murder case of Sharmin Rima, and Hasan, the convict in the Daisy murder case. He began his role as an executioner in 2001.

Hailing from Ichakhali village in Gazaria Union of Palash Upazila, Narsingdi, Shahjahan Bhuiyan was the son of Hasen Ali Bhuiyan.

Following various criminal charges, Shahjahan was imprisoned on December 17, 1991, in Manikganj District Jail.
