Wave Foundation on Thursday demanded to ensure the provision of 33 per cent women in political parties.

In collaboration with The Asia Foundation, Wave Foundation placed the demand at a discussion on Womens Participation in Politics: Existing Legal Framework and Reality held at CIRDAP Auditorium in the city.

Speakers at the discussion said although the nomination of women candidates increased in the last national election, it was very nominal.

They mentioned that 1970 people contested in this election whereas only 96 of them were women (4.87 percent).

They pointed out that mainly backward social attitudes, patriarchal attitudes, lack of skills and social pressures still remain challenges for womens participation in politics.

Wave Foundation Executive Director Mohsin Ali presided over the discussion.

Politicians of different political parties and academicians spoke in the discussion, among others.

The Wave Foundation with support from the Asia Foundation has been conducting various activities to empower women and encourage their participation in politics under the project, Building a Regional Network on Gender Inclusion in Political Participation.
