The High Court on Tuesday granted bail to executive editor of The
Daily Star Syed Ashfaqul Haque in a
case concerning the death of a teenage domestic help at their Mohammadpur residence in the city.
Dismissing a rule issued earlier aganst Ashfaqul Haque, an
HC bench of Justice Md Rezaul Hasan and Justice Fahmida Quader passed the order.
Senior lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan was present on behalf of Ashfaqul Haque.
On April 22, the HC granted ad-interim bail to Ashfaqul's wife Tania Khandaker and, at the same time, issued a rule asking the state to explain in eight weeks why Syed Ashfaqul Haque should not be granted bail in a case.
Dismissing that rule, the court gave him the bail today, said lawyer Khurshid Alam.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Assam Jaglul Hossain on April 22 denied the bail. Later, they submitted an application with High Court against this order.
Preeti Urang, 15, died after she fell through an opening on Ashfaqul's eighth-floor flat on February 6.
She was daughter of a tea worker and hailed from Moulvibazar.
Police took Ashfaqul and his wife Tania into custody within hours of the incident.
