Public university teachers demand withdrawal of Prottoy Pension Scheme

Teachers of at least 35 public universities across the country on Sunday held human chains simultaneously to press their demand to withdraw Prottoy Pension Scheme, branding it discriminatory.

Dhaka University Teachers Association (DUTA) President and also General Secretary of Bangladesh University Teachers Association Federation Prof Md Nizamul Haque Bhuiyan confirmed the matter to reporters.

DUTA held a human chain at the base of Aparejaya Bangla on the campus at 11:30am.

From the programme, Prof Nizam announced several other programmes.

He said teachers of all public universities will take break from service except taking examinations from 10am to 12pm on March 28.

If the government does not withdraw the proposed pension scheme by June 3, the teachers will take break from service half a day on June 4, Prof Nizam declared.

DUTA General Secretary Zeenat Huda said no teacher and officers will come to the office on the days.

"We do not want to announce tougher movements. I expect the government will withdraw the scheme before it starts to be implemented," Prof Zeenat said.

Prof Nizam said the proposed pension scheme will curtail many advantages of future teachers and discourage meritorious students from teaching profession.

Prof Zeenat mentioned the demand as the fight of teachers life and death.

The Finance Ministry, in a notification on March 13, announced that all officers and employees, joining the service of autonomous, self-governing, nationalised, statutory or similar organisations and their subordinate institutions on or after July 1, 2024, would be included in the universal pension scheme.

DUTA leaders have branded the Universal Pension Scheme for university teachers as illogical. They argue that the system is discriminatory and violates basic rights.

The teachers urged Prime Ministers intervention to withdraw the scheme.
