Bidi Workers Federation presents 7-point demands

Bangladesh Bidi Workers Federation, Greater Rangpur region presented a seven-point demand including withdrawal of duty on bedi, increase in wages of workers, increase in price of low-end cigarettes.

They raised the demands at public meeting held on Sunday at Rangpur Public Library ground ahead of the announcement of the forthcoming budget.
Amin Uddin (BSC), president of Bangladesh Bidi Sramik Federation presided over the meeting moderated by General Secretary of Greater Rangpur Region Bidi Sramik Union Abul Hasnat Lovelu.

Mostafizar Rahman, Mayor of Rangpur City Corporation (Joint), was present as chief guest.

Former President of Rangpur Metropolitan Awami League Safiur Rahman Sofi was present as a special guest. General Secretary of Bidi Sramik Federation Harik Hossain was present as the main speaker.

Bangladesh Bidi Workers Federation Vice President Nazim Uddin, Anwar Hossain, Joint Secretary Abdul Ghafoor, Organizing Secretary Shamim Islam, Co-Organizing Secretary Lutfar Rahman also spoke on the occasion.  

The other demands of the workers include that the government declare the bidi industry as a cottage industry, to stop brokering of British American Tobacco Company, to stop  illegal bidi factories and to increase the prices of cigarettes from 45 to 65 rupees per pack of low-end 10-shalaka cigarettes by multinational companies.

Mayor of Rangpur City Corporation (Rasik) Mostafizar Rahman said that the indigenous ancient labor intensive bidi industry should be saved from the conspiracy of foreign multinational companies.  

About 2 million workers across the country earn their living by working in bedi factories. To protect the livelihood and employment of workers, duty on bedi should be withdrawn. Bedi industry should be declared as a cottage industry by increasing wages of bedi workers.
