Elevator woes plague Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall of JnU

Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall of Jagannath University is the only residence hall for the universitys students. This 16-storey building houses 1,200 female students.

However, there are only four elevators for these students, and their poor quality is causing significant inconvenience.

Students frequently report being trapped in the elevators for 5-10 minutes, turning them into potential death traps.

Farzana Rahman, a student in the Political Science Department residing in the dormitory, recounted an incident: "In the morning, six of us were taking the elevator up with our breakfast. Suddenly, the elevator got stuck. We kept pressing the emergency button, but the door would only open briefly before shutting off again. Three of us managed to get out, but three were still inside. We were trapped for about five minutes. Only Allah knows what would have happened to us if there hadn been a fan inside."

Sadia Hossain, a fourth-year student, shared her experience: "The elevator often has problems. It suddenly stops while going up. One day, I was going to the 14th floor, and after reaching the 7th floor, the elevator just stopped. It wouldn go down or up; it was just stuck in one place, shaking. After pressing the alarm, the lift operator came and opened the elevator."

Another student from the hall said, "It would be one thing if only one elevator had issues, but all four elevators have similar problems. If any unwanted situation arises, causing an accident, who will take responsibility then? It is unnecessary to put the lives of 1,200 girls at risk with such poor-quality elevators."

Regarding this issue, the universitys Chief Engineer, Helal Uddin Patwary, said, "The elevators were supplied by the Education Engineering Department. These elevators frequently have problems. We have appointed maintenance staff for the dormitory. Whenever an issue arises, we address it promptly."
