A youth, who got GPA-5 in SSC recently, was killed in a
clash between two groups of the
Swechchhasebak League, a volunteer wing of the Bangladesh Awami League (
AL), in the capital's Manik Mia Avenue on Saturday afternoon.
The clash broke out around 5.30pm at Krishak Bazar area adjacent to Manik Mia Avenue under Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
The deceased Mehedi Hasan, 18, was son of Hanif Mia, hailed from Jamalpur Sadar upazila. He used to live with his family in the capital's Nurechala area in Badda and got GPA-5 in Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination recently from Cholmaid High School in Jamalpur.
His uncle Md Chayan, former organising secretary of Swechchhasebak League in Nurerchala, said a procession was arranged by the organisation on the occasion of Sheikh Hasina's Homecoming Day on Saturday. He brought Mehedi to the procession, which started in front of Matsabhavan and ended at Manik Mia Avenue.
"At the end of the procession, supporters of Dhaka North's ward-28 councillor attacked rivals triggering a clash. Caught in the incident while crossing the road, Mehedi was seriously injured."
Later, he was taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital, where the doctors declared him dead.
Forkan Hossain, councillor of ward 28, Dhaka North, said, "I've heard about the clash. None of my supporters were involved in that incident."
HM Azizul Haque, Deputy Commissioner of Tejgaon Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, confirmed the death matter, adding that police are working to unveil the actual reason behind the death and legal action will be taken later.
