Mother, son, 6 others killed in lightning strikes in 4 districts

Lightning strikes on Saturday killed at least eight people including a mother and her son in Narsingdi, Tangail, Mymensingh and Gazipur districts.

Our Narsingdi correspondent reported that four people were killed and another person injured after lightning strikes struck them in different areas in the district.

The deceased were identified as Sufia Begum, 35, and her son Emon Mia, 10, from Alokbali village, rice harvesting worker Quayyum Mia, 20, from Raipuras Baghaikandi; and Mosleh Uddin, 55, from the Hajipur.

Sufia Begums husband, Kamal Mia, was injured in the incident.

Kamal Mia told reporters, "My wife, son, a labourer, and I went to the fields in the morning to cut paddy," he said. "Intense rain and thunder started suddenly around 10:00am.      

We were trying to protect ourselves from the rain by wrapping ourselves in a polythene sheet. Suddenly, there was a lightning strike and we were all injured."

Locals rescued them and rushed them to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital, where a doctor declared Sufia, Emon, and Quayyum dead.

Mosleh Uddin was killed in a lightning strike around the same time in Hajipur.

Narsingdi Sadar Police Station OC Tanvir Ahmed confirmed the matter.

In Tangails Kalihati, two cousins were killed in a lightning strike while harvesting paddy on Saturday.

Union Parishad Chairman Md Sohrab Ali said the accident occurred at Noabari village in Birbashinda Union on Saturday morning.

The deceased were identified as Afzal Hossain, 52, and Amir Hossain, 50, from Chakdafar village in Dinajpurs Birganj.

Citing locals, Sohrab said Afzal and Amir had rented a room at Awliabad Bazar and had been harvesting paddy in many nearby areas for the past week.

Our Mymensingh Correspondent reported that lightning strike on Saturday killed a housewife while she was bringing cattle home during rainfall in Gafargaon.

Deceased Hasina, 38, wife of Village Police Kanchan Mia, was a resident of Dhopaghat at Rauna union in Gafargaon.

Union Parishad Member Sanib Mia said when it started raining in the morning, Hasina went out to bring the cattle back home.

She was seriously injured by a lightning strike at that time. Her relatives rushed her to Upazila Health Complex, where the doctors declared her dead, said Sanib Mia.

Lightning killed another woman in Sreepur upazila of Tangail on yesterday.

The deceased was identified as Fatema Khatun, 45.

Confirming her death, Sub-Inspector Quddus Mia of Sreepur Police Station said the incident occurred around 10:00am when Fatema was doing household chores in the yard.

She was then taken to Sreepur Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared her dead, the SI added.
